We had planned for sun, surf, and lazy beach days. But midweek, a surprise tropical storm rolled in. What could have ruined the trip instead brought one of its most memorable highlights.

Storm Roll-In & Early Adjustments

We woke to dark clouds, wind whistling through palm fronds. Rain pounded our RV. Instead of pouty faces, I reminded my partner: “We’ll make it an adventure.” We hauled chairs inside, stowed gear, and brewed strong coffee.

Indoor Fun & Cooking Together

We headed to one of the resort’s recreation rooms with a full kitchen. There, I met another couple who were also sheltering in place. Soon, the three of us were laughing over chopping boards, comparing travel stories.

We made gumbo (camp style):

  • Ingredients: andouille sausage, shrimp, okra, onion, bell pepper, celery, broth, roux, spices.
  • Method: Brown sausage, sauté veggies, stir in roux (flour + oil), add broth & okra, simmer, then shrimp last few minutes. Serve over rice.

That night we dined family style at the rec room’s large table, storm howling outside, lights dimmed, conversation lively.

Mid-Storm Walk & Discovery

When the worst passed, I ventured out with my new friend in rain jackets. We walked muddy paths near the catch-and-release pond. A heron fluffed its feathers in drizzle. Ferns glistened. We talked about life shifts, fears, dreams.

Aftermath & Sunshine Return

Next morning, the storm clouds parted. The beach glowed. We swapped contact info with our new friends and promised a reunion here. The storm, instead of spoiling the trip, became the thread that knit connections.

On departure, I realized: trips don’t need perfect weather. It’s the people, the stories, the shared moments that stay.
