I’m used to summer beach trips, but I decided to try Port A RV Resort in autumn. The crowd thinned; the air softened. It was magic.

Arrival & Cooler Evenings

We rolled in late September. The days were warm, but evenings carried a whisper of coolness. We brought light sweaters. The pools were still heated, so we swam by day and soaked in the hot tub at dusk.

Bird Migration & Quiet Trails

One morning we visited the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. Birds migrating south filled the skies—warblers, warblers, more warblers. On Charlie’s Pasture trails, the light was slanted, golden, haunting.

Autumn Recipe: Gumbo & Cornbread

We made seafood gumbo one evening (as earlier): adding shrimp, crab, okra, sausage, broth, rice. On the side, I whipped up cornbread muffins (mix, bake in muffin tin over the RV stovetop or in oven).

We ate under a crisp moon, conversation soft.

Evening Stargazing & Reflection

Cool air, fewer insects, clearer skies. I lay on a camping blanket outside the RV and watched Orion rise. The Milky Way spilled across the sky. I felt infinitely small and infinite at once.

Last Day: Shell Hunt & Farewell Walk

In the morning, I walked the shoreline. Seashells were abundant in quieter months. I collected pieces and tucked them in my pocket. I said goodbye slowly.

On checkout, I looked back at the resort: the pools, the paths, the pond reflecting light. I resolved: next autumn, I’ll definitely be back.
