I had never surfed. But I’d always wanted to try. So at Port Aransas, I signed up for a lesson and set out to conquer the waves (or wipe out trying).

The Lesson & First (Wobbly) Ride

The instructor taught paddling form, pop-up technique, water safety. My first wave was a tottering stand for two seconds. Then I swallowed seawater. My instructor coached, encouraged. By the third try, I slid awkwardly, but I stood briefly. I laughed, triumphant.

Post-Surf Brunch

Hungry and exhilarated, I biked into town and discovered a breakfast spot. I feasted on shrimp omelette and biscuits, replaying the morning’s spills to the waiter.

Afternoon Pool & Social Moments

Back at the resort, I floated in one of the temperature-controlled pools, then chatted with fellow RVers. They told me about fishing trips, local hot spots, places to catch sunset.

Sunset Poke Bowls (RV style)

For dinner, I went simple:

  • Ingredients: pre-cooked rice or microwave rice, diced raw tuna (or shrimp if tuna unavailable), soy sauce, sesame oil, avocado, cucumber, sesame seeds.
  • Method: Assemble in a bowl, drizzle sauce, sprinkle seeds.
I ate just as the sun slid into the Gulf horizon, colors reflected in my bowl.

Reflection & Next Steps

By nightfall, my muscles ached, I could hardly keep my eyes open. But inside, I felt proud. I conquered something new. I decided: next trip, I’ll try stand-up paddleboarding. Port A RV Resort already feels like a place to grow, to try, to fall (and get back up).
